The Arab Spring began when Tunisians conceived the revolution that spread across the Arab world. Their October 23, 2011, elections confirmed that the Tunisian future would be theocratic, but the new government said it wanted to be accepted by the West as “moderate,” proclaiming a Turkish model. The Islamist Renaissance Party, Ennahda, won 89 percent of 217 seats in a Constituent Assembly charged with writing a new constitution. After one full year of debate intended to develop a constitution to be purportedly based on democratic values, legislative elections will be held.

Remember how the West believed that freedom and human rights would result from Tunisia’s revolution in January 2011? And Islam confirmed this commitment to a democratic civil society and the rule of law. The faithful have been called to freedom. For proof, simply see the articles and publications posted at the Minaret of Freedom Institute.

Tunisian human rights activist Moncef Marzouki’s Congress for Republic Party won 29 seats, coming in second. The voice of freedom and human rights may be quiet in the debate over a new constitution, but it will be heard.
