It has been a long time coming, as work began in 2006 to build the track in what was essentially a swamp forty minutes south of Auckland. The resource consent was a major hurdle, as it always is but in November 2006 consent was granted after a two and a half year process.
How to Get to Hampton Downs
The new State Highway One Expressway directly from Central Auckland, 65 km away, and a similar upgrading from Hamilton 65 km away means that spectators can get to the track in forty minutes from either city.
World Class Category 2 FIA Track
The aim from the very beginning was to have a world class track, but not only that – to build a massive facility that included apartments, workshops, and businesses – virtually a small town in its own right. The final design of the full category 2 FIA approved circuit was completed by Clive Bowen when he worked for Dick Bennetts at West Surrey Racing.
