Live televised debates are standard practice in the US come election time along – with advertisement strategies that focus on trashing opponents rather than actual policies – so it’s a wonder why it’s taken so long to reach the British shores given how much of modern politics is based on personality and charisma. Although the leadership square off is on the horizon it’s the Chancellor of the Exchequer and his would-be replacements that star in this history making programme.

From the prepped opening where each man was given the opportunity to toe their respected party lines it was obvious this wasn’t going to ascend into the heated, bile spewing tirade viewers were hoping for but more like a polite discussion were they spoke in turn and merely contradicted each other’s points.
