Søren Kierkegaard was an existentialist philosopher and theologian who lived in the nineteenth century. He is best known for developing the a philosophy of religion that does not rely on an objective moral reality to anchor individuals' faith.

He was born in Copenhagen on May 5, 1813. His father was a deeply religious man and his mother was a maid in his father's household. In 1830, Kierkegaard attended the University of Copenhagen where he studied theology, but his later works became seminal examples of the blend between philosophy and literature.

The Kierkegaardian Dialogue and Pseudonyms

A prolific writer, Kierkegaard attended the theatre to gain public notice then stole away during the show to write his complex theoretical works. Much of his philosophical style was formed by Socratic dialogues and irony. He is known for writing with various pseudonyms (Victor Eremita, Johannes de silentio, Constantin Constantiu) with varying and often contradictory opinions.
