Internationally renowned Franco-American artist Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010) would have been 100 years old on Christmas Day this year. And one of Switzerland’s most prestigious cultural institutions, the Beyeler Foundation in Basel, is honoring her centennial by mounting a major retrospective exhibition of her work.
In the lead-up to the opening of the Beyeler exhibit on September 3, an iconic spider by the artist -- a massive 927.1 x 891.5 x 1023.6 cm (30.4 x 29.25 x 33.6 foot) bronze -- has been touring Switzerland.
The spider spent May 24 to June 7 in the Swiss capital, Bern, where it was set in the square outside the Federal Parliament. Then it moved on to downtown Zurich, the country’s financial capital, from June 10 to July 28. And now it’s in Geneva, French-speaking Switzerland’s largest city and home to the UN’s European headquarters.
