In 1832 her mother, the Duchess of Kent presented her with a black leather bound book intended as a diary, Victoria quickly began keeping a journal of her daily comings and goings, thoughts and opinions and she carried this on for the rest of her life.

New Subjects

From 1836 she began to study anatomy and law, and she was brought the daily English newspapers every morning so that she could acquire a good grasp on current affairs both internal and external, she continued to learn English and French books and could read the original versions in French.

Singing with Luigi Lablache

At the age of sixteen she had her first singing lesson with Luigi Lablache, an Italian opera singer who had stared in Mozart’s operas, Victoria loved this and she sang arias with Lablache who congratulated her and said that she was incredible, he gave the princess one lesson a week, but this was not enough for her, she wanted a lesson every week, and would sing duets with her mother, she particularly enjoyed Norma and L’Elisire d’Amore.
